Chiprovtsi city is located in the picturesque valley of Northwest Stara Planina. The village has been founded in deep antiquity. In the vicinity of the town are located ancient Roman road that leads to the fortress facilities guarding the mighty territory of the former Roman Empire. The main activities which the Chiprovtsi population was engaged with from antiquity to the present day were mining of precious metals (gold and silver) and weaving. Until 1688 when the Chiprovsko rebellion has started against the Ottoman power, the city is a major commercial, economic and cultural center within the empire.

The high level of mining and processing precious metals was due to the large colony of Saxons who settled in Chiprovtsi. They were Catholics and this largely predetermines the demography of the city. Until the rebellion, 2 500 people have been catholics and approximately 2000 - Orthodox.

An interesting fact is that the two main churches - Catholic and Orthodox have kept one to another without any evidence of religious intolerance among the ethnics. Since then, dates the information on the Chiprovsko Gold School, which has pursued the Catholic church. Orthodox population has been engaged with weaving and cattle-breeding. Gold processing and weaving have complemented each other. In many of these ornaments entered in the Chiprovtsi carpets can be found items that were on the inlaid gold and silver from the period of Chiprovts sichool of gold. The most characteristic elements of the school was working with silver-gilt. After the rebellion in 1688 the catholic population has been subjected to destruction and expatriation. A small colony managed to save itself and settles in the territory of today's Romania, by forming the known today minority of Banatski Bulgarians, who continue to practice the art processing of precious metals.
The unique Chiprovtsi carpet industry is undoubtedly one of the phenomena with which Bulgaria amazes the world - fantastic ornaments and figures, impressive materials and fabrics, which the Chiprovtsi carpets are made of and today it attracts the attention of experts and connoisseurs from all continents. The Chiprovtsi School of carpets dates since 1750 in which an initial period dominated the triangular pieces and were used 4 main colors: testaceous, ocher, green, blue Indian. For more than 250 years the carpet industry is the main livelihood for the people in Chiprovtsi. The Chiprovtsi school becomes a phenomenon perpetuating Bulgarian applied arts.

Kilimite are made entirely from natural products- the basis – cotton and weft - wool which have very long life, quality and the colors does not change for more than 50 years on either side of the carpet. Depending on the thickness of the wool yarn, 1 square meters weighs between 1 and 1.5 kg. The Base is made up of 48 threads on 10 cm One weaver can weave 2-2,5 sq.m. per month.
